Freedom of expression and religious liberty are considered as valuable principles and are in most jurisdictions seen as protected in the workplace, so that employees are to a certain extent authorised to express them whilst carrying out their duties and the employer needs to provide at least reasonable accommodations in this respect.
However, there are situations where the freedom employees are entitled to – based on legal provisions or company policy – creates inequality when they award distinctive rights to part of the employees only or are used as a vehicle to express controversial positions towards other employees/minorities.
The session will explore those situations, and how to approach and possibly prevent them.
